Useful Tips on Caring for Your Wig

As a wig becomes part of your life, you'll want to take care of it. Beautiful Wigs has over 20 years of experience in wigs and beauty care and offers seasoned advice on wearing a wig.
  • Make sure your hair is clean and flat. Either pin it down or braid it into cornrows.
  • Always wear a wig cap! An alternative is the owner's favorite: a wig headband, which both secures your wig and provides great fit and protection for hair edges.
  • Since some wigs are adjustable, get your wig sized at a specialty store for a perfect fit. See our head measurement chart.

Caring for Your Wig When Not in Use

  • Store your wig on a wig stand for proper ventilation. Always remove your wig at night unless it is a glue-on lace front, which can be worn for weeks at a time.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight. Covering your wig with a scarf is a great way to keep out dust. Shield your wig from sunlight coming from nearby windows.
  • Avoiding sunlight is especially important for wigs made of human hair, which will change over time when they are exposed to the sun's UV rays.
  • Wash your wig after every 10 uses or so. Wash more often if you've been sweaty or active.

How to Wash Your Human Hair Wig

Before you wash your human hair wig, gently but thoroughly brush the wig with a wig brush. For wigs with a tight curl, don't brush the hair but use your fingers to gently remove any tangles.
  • Use a mild shampoo.
  • In a sink or basin, add a small amount of shampoo to cold water and turn your wig inside out and immerse.
  • Gently swirl and let soak for about five minutes.
  • Rinse your wig gently in cold water until all the shampoo is removed. Repeat.
  • Gently apply conditioner and leave on for two minutes to allow it to penetrate.
  • Rinse the wig gently in cold water until all the conditioner is removed.
  • Wrap your wig in a towel and gently pat out excess water. As an option, you may very lightly apply a conditioning spray, spraying about 10 to 12 inches from the surface of the hair.
  • Place your clean wig on a wig stand and allow to dry before brushing and combing. Do not dry in direct sunlight.

  • In a sink or basin, mix two capfuls of shampoo with cold water
  • Turn your wig inside out and immerse
  • Gently swirl and soak for five minutes
  • Gently rinse your wig in cold water until all the shampoo is removed
  • Apply one to two capfuls of wig conditioner and allow the fibers to absorb the conditioner for about 2 minutes

How to Style Your Wig

Style your wig with a wig brush, a wig comb, or your fingertips. Do not use a brush designed for human hair, since these brushes can create excessive tension and overstretch the hair.

Your best styling tool is the most inexpensive - a spray bottle filled with clean, cool water. Lightly spritz your wig with water to remove static electricity and return your wig to its original look.
